John Woodcock MP, Labour's shadow transport minister, responding to a report in the Sunday Telegraph that the government may abandon its commitment to the High Speed Two rail line, said:

"David Cameron's attempt to appease unhappy backbenchers by suggesting he might shelve Britain's vital new high speed rail link shows how weak his leadership has become.

"Creating uncertainty over HS2 could put at risk investment in a project that is vital to the country's economic future.

"Instead of flailing around in the wake of their battering at the polls, ministers must end this damaging speculation over whether the government remains committed to the plan."
