Helen Goodman MP, Labour's Shadow Culture Minister, responding to the BBC Trust's proposal to take children's programmes off BBC1 and BBC2, said:

"I am very concerned that the BBC Trust is proposing to take children’s programmes off BBC1 and 2. This marks a real downgrading of the priority they are giving to children’s viewing.

"CBBC and CBeebies are 70 and 71 on the electronic programme guide. Everyone knows that in the digital TV world, position on the EPG is valuable in raising viewing figures. Pushing children’s programmes down in this way does not fit with the BBC’s public service mission. It is not clear how they will save money from this change. The switchover to digital is quite separate from the choice over which channel a programme is scheduled on."
