Roberta Blackman-Woods MP, Labour's Shadow Local Government Minister, commenting on the announcement on High Streets today, said:
"Grant Shapps gave the game away when he alluded in interviews to the gimmicky nature of today’s announcement, something for which he has considerable form.
"No local authority is going to turn their nose up to £100,000.
"But it’s irrelevant when local High Streets and businesses are losing millions thanks to the disastrous VAT increase, a squeeze on spending power of people with low and middle incomes, and an unremitting message of woe. The truth is the Government’s misguided economic policy is dampening consumer confidence.
"If you want vibrant, thriving High Streets around the country, as I do, they would benefit most from a real plan for growth, something this out of touch Government has failed to provide."
