Jack Dromey MP, Labour’s Shadow Housing Minister, responding to Grant Shapps' comments on homelessness this morning, said:
“Grant Shapps’ statistics this morning were highly misleading. He talks about wanting to prevent homelessness and rough sleeping. He’s even told us it’s what brought him into politics. But in Government, it’s what you do that matters and on Grant Shapps’ watch homelessness and rough sleeping rose by 14 per cent and 23 per cent in the last year.
“The Housing Minister claimed he is 'trying' to build 1,500 hostel places. But on the ground the opposite is true as Homeless Link’s SNAP report shows that there are that many fewer bed spaces in 2012 compared with the previous year.
“Grant Shapps is a Minister in relentless pursuit of headlines, presiding over the biggest housing crisis in a generation.”
