Cathy Jamieson MP, Labour’s Shadow Treasury Minister, in response to today’s inflation figures, said:
“The fall in the inflation rate is welcome as last year's VAT rise continues to drop out of the figures. But families and pensioners are still facing a harsh squeeze on their incomes from this government's policies.
“A family with children will lose an average of £511 simply from changes like cuts to tax credits coming into force this year, according to the Institute for Fiscal Studies. And while millions are paying more, the government is giving a tax cut to millionaires.
“With Britain pushed into recession by the Chancellor's economic mistakes people on low and middle incomes are paying a heavy price from this out of touch government's unfair choices.”
