Commenting on new analysis of government plans for FE loans released today, Shadow Minister for Further Education, Skills & Regional Growth Gordon Marsden MP said:
“This analysis shows how damaging the Tory-led Government’s FE loans policy is set to be, with as many as 100,000 fewer college students as a result. The Government’s own research has found that barely one in ten learners said they would have still taken their courses under an FE loans system, and Ministers admit they will only be providing funding that will support 80 percent of the current cohort.
“With reports that the Government will set in train the introduction of FE loans within weeks, this could create huge uncertainty at the very time when colleges have to make crucial decisions on future student numbers. And there are concerns that this time scale could prevent full Parliamentary scrutiny of the proposals.
"This Tory-led Government is putting the wrong people first. Ministers need to urgently revisit their flawed proposals for FE loans or they will put the chances of an entire generation of adult learners at risk, as well as their chances of going on into higher education.”
