Labour's Shadow Northern Ireland Secretary, Vernon Coaker MP, responding to the news that deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness MP MLA will meet HM The Queen in Northern Ireland next week, said:

"I welcome this announcement by Sinn Féin. This is another important sign that things are moving in the right direction. Martin McGuinness has shown significant leadership over the last number of years, and his contribution to building a better future for Northern Ireland is further enhanced by this decision.

"I would like to pay tribute to HM The Queen for the huge contribution she has made to peace and reconciliation. Her visit to Ireland last year was truly momentous and, in this year of her Diamond Jubilee, she has again demonstrated her ability to bring people together in Northern Ireland."
