Mary Creagh MP, Labour's Shadow Environment Secretary, commenting on flooding which has struck parts of the country over the last 48 hours, said:
"The North of England is starting the big flood clean up and crossing its fingers for the next 24 hours. I pay tribute to our police, fire and council staff who have worked through the night helping communities deal with the misery and disruption of the floods.
"People in flood prone areas are finding it harder to get insurance and their premiums and excesses are going up. The Tory-led Government has cut £400m from the flood defence budget and are failing to ensure that flood insurance remains available to all. There is a crisis looming on flood insurance that will leave many homes uninsurable, unmortgageable and unsellable."
