Alison Seabeck MP, Labour’s Shadow Defence Minister, responding to news reports about the potential closure of Portsmouth Dockyard putting 3000 shipbuilding jobs at risk, said:
"The Secretary of State cannot have hidden plans for closures and redundancies.
"The Defence Secretary triumphantly claimed to have balanced the budget and finalised the equipment programme but that now appears either incomplete or incompetent.
"The country should be told if there is a review of British shipbuilding, its remit, purpose and possible consequences.
"Thousands of livelihoods and historic pride are at stake.
"These worrying revelations underline that defence industrial decline is coming to characterise this Government when we need reform to preserve our skills base."
