Catherine McKinnell MP, Labour’s Shadow Treasury minister, in response to today’s inflation figures, said:
"This fall in the inflation rate is welcome as last year’s VAT rise continues to drop out of the figures. But families and pensioners are still facing a real squeeze on their incomes because of this Government’s policies.
"A family with children will lose an average of £511 from changes coming into force this year alone, according to the independent Institute for Fiscal Studies. But while millions are paying more, David Cameron and George Osborne are pressing ahead with their £3 billion tax cut for millionaires. How can that be fair?
"People on low and middle incomes are paying a heavy price for this Government’s unfair choices and for failed economic policies which have pushed us into a double-dip recession. That's why we urgently need a change of course and a plan for jobs and growth to get our economy moving again, get people back to work and so get the deficit.
