Proposals from Ministers to introduce tolls on parts of the A14 could open the way for a tolling free for all across the existing road network, Labour has warned today.

Transport Secretary Justine Greening has confirmed that up to 20 miles of the key A14 trunk road, linking East Anglia with the Midlands, could be subject to tolls as part of an upgrade scheme.

The announcement comes after months of confusion over government policy on road tolling and following a speech by the Prime Minister in March in which he claimed that road tolls would only apply to new capacity.

John Woodcock MP, Labour’s Shadow Transport Minister, said:

"Tolling existing roads is another broken promise to motorists who are being squeezed like never before by this out of touch Government. Ministers need to spell out how many road users will be caught by the new tolls they are set to impose on existing roads."
