Gavin Shuker MP, Labour’s Shadow Environment Minister, responding to today’s figures showing a rise in the use of carrier bags for the second year in a row, said:
"The Tory-led Government risks turning Britain back into the dirty man of Europe with more carrier bags given out every year since the election. Last year we saw the first rise in carrier bags use since 2006, this year the figure has gone up again.
"Labour helped cut plastic bag use by 40 per cent between 2006 and 2010 by working with supermarkets and consumer groups. The Government have failed to set challenging recycling targets for England unlike the Welsh and Scottish Governments, and have slashed funding for Keep Britain Tidy by 90 per cent. The Government needs to urgently work with retailers to reverse this damaging trend."
