Vernon Coaker MP, Labour's Shadow Secretary of State for Northern Ireland, condemning violence in Belfast which resulted in injuries to 47 police officers, said:
“The sustained attacks on police officers in Belfast yesterday were disgraceful and my thoughts are with the injured officers.
“Community and political leaders need to take a clear stand this morning and say: enough is enough.
“There is an onus on those taking part in parades or protests to respect their neighbours and behave with dignity. What happened yesterday was a result of the significant tension built-up over the last number of weeks because of a failure to do that.
“I urge everyone in positions of responsibility to devote their efforts to calming tensions in the coming days and weeks.”
