Chris Bryant MP, Labour's Shadow Home Office Minister, said in response to the report on student visas today from the Business Innovation and Skills Committee:
"David Cameron and Theresa May said they would cut net migration from the hundreds of thousands to the tens of thousands by the end of this Parliament. We have long said the Government has no credible policy to deliver on its target, especially when net migration of students is 213,000, and net migration as a whole is currently 216,000.
"Clearly there needs to be a continued crackdown on bogus colleges, as there has been under successive governments. But David Cameron and Theresa May need to come clean with the British people about their promises.
"Rather than preventing legitimate students our economy needs, the Government should focus on the worsening illegal immigration situation. We need to reverse the fall in deportation of those who break the rules, and the rise in people absconding through immigration controls."
