Andrew Gwynne MP, Labour's Shadow Health Minister, in response to the Audit Commission's NHS Financial Year 2011/12 report, said:
"It is very concerning to see such a sharp increase in the amount of Foundation Trusts and NHS Trusts that are now in deficit - more than doubling since 2010.
"This Government has clearly lost a grip on NHS finances. David Cameron has cut the NHS budget for two years running and over £3bn is being wasted on a disruptive re-organisation when every effort should have been focused on meeting the unprecedented financial challenge. We are already seeing increasingly desperate attempts to cut costs as treatments are rationed and thousands of nursing posts are cut. Patients must not pay the price for Ministers' failings."
