Sadiq Khan MP, Labour's Shadow Justice Secretary, commenting on today’s announcement that the Government is to reconsider their proposals on recalling MPs, said:

"There was a consensus across all three main parties at the last election to introduce a power to recall MPs. But the Tory-led Government have managed to make a mess of this cross-party support, with their proposals recently ridiculed by the Select Committee that called for them to be abandoned.

Embarrassingly, the Government has today admitted their plans are in tatters, and they’ve kicked the proposals into the long grass, the latest in a raft of shambolic attempts at constitutional reform.

"This is another broken promise from David Cameron while Nick Clegg’s boast, when he became Deputy Prime Minister, that he would be the ‘great reformer’, is now a distant joke."
