Hilary Benn MP, Labour's Shadow Communities and Local Government Secretary, responding to The Lord Jenkin of Roding’s remarks likening the Tory-led Government's changes to council tax benefit to the Poll Tax, said:

"Local authorities, charities and the Labour Party have been warning that Pickles’ Poll Tax will be a disaster.

"A council tax rise on the poorest coming in on the same day as a tax cut for millionaires shows just how out of touch the Government is.  It’s time for them to reverse this disaster in the making."
