David Hanson MP, Labour’s Shadow Policing Minister, responding to comments from the Vice President of the Association of Chief Police Officers that police forces will have to rely more on special constables and volunteers in the wake of Government budget cuts, said:
"Labour supported the expansion of special constables in Government - they do an excellent job and should be supported and encouraged.
“But they were always planned to be in addition to police officers not replacing them. The Tory-led Government are cutting over 15,000 police officers and so far nearly 7,000 have already gone from the frontline.
“Our communities need that full-time professional service in the fight to reduce crime.”<div>
