David Hanson MP, Labour’s Shadow Policing Minister, responding to news that the Home Secretary has written to the Association of Chief Police Officers asking them to prioritise Remembrance Services, said:

“Remembrance Services are an opportunity for communities to reflect on the sacrifices made by those in the service of our country and are hugely important.

“Despite the Police Minister stating that the policing of Remembrance Services is an operational matter for the police, continuing concerns over the policing of these events has moved the Home Secretary to write to ACPO just days before these services are about to take place.

“Police forces around the country are having to make decisions in the wake of huge Government cuts to their budgets, leading to the loss of at least 15,000 officers, with 7,000 gone from the front-line already.”
