David Hanson MP, Labour’s Shadow Policing Minister, commenting on the Scrap Metal Dealers Bill which is under threat as a result of more than 100 amendments tabled by two Conservative MPs, said:

"It is shameful that some Tory MPs are putting new action to stop metal theft at risk.

"First David Cameron's Government dragged their heels on bringing in much needed laws, now Tory MPs are threatening to scupper them entirely.

“With metal theft still a huge issue, I hope that the MPs involved reconsider their position and listen to the likes of the Royal British Legion ahead of Remembrance weekend.

“If this Bill is scrapped then the Government need to give a firm guarantee that they will bring it back in Government time as a matter of urgency.”
