Ivan Lewis MP, Labour’s Shadow International Development Secretary, in response to the fall of Goma in Eastern DRC to M23 rebels, said:
"The fall of Goma and deteriorating humanitarian situation in Eastern DRC requires urgent UK Government action.
“As one of Rwanda’s closest allies we have a special responsibility to send the strongest message that the Rwandan government’s support for M23 will have serious consequences. William Hague and Justine Greening must stop dithering. The Foreign Secretary should summon the Rwandan Ambassador to the foreign office immediately and leave him in no doubt that the UK is prepared to take serious diplomatic action unless the Rwandan Government condemns M23 and ceases all support for their activities.
“Greening should make it clear now that no further budget support payments will be made to the Rwandan Government until they end all support for all militia activity in Eastern DRC. This week’s developments are further evidence that Andrew Mitchell’s decision to reinstate budget support to Rwanda sent entirely the wrong message and was an act of enormous folly."
