Caroline Flint MP, Labour’s Shadow Energy and Climate Change Secretary, commenting on the Government’s announcement ahead of the forthcoming Energy Bill, said:
“The omission of a clear target to decarbonise Britain’s power sector by 2030 is a humiliating failure by the Liberal Democrats and a betrayal of David Cameron’s promise to be the greenest government ever.
“The short-sightedness of the Government is damaging the economy. Government splits and infighting on energy policy have already seen billions of pounds in investment going elsewhere or be put on hold, and added to the cost of capital, which is a totally unnecessary cost for families and businesses struggling with soaring energy bills. The Government’s failure to set a clear roadmap to decarbonise the power sector by 2030 just creates more uncertainty for investors who want to invest in British businesses and jobs
"At a time when we need huge investment in our clean energy infrastructure, and when people have already seen their bills go up by more than £200 in the last 2 years, it's more important than ever that we have a competitive energy market that delivers fair prices and works in the public interest. That's why Labour has called for an overhaul to the energy market and the creation of a tough new watchdog with powers to force energy companies to pass on price cuts."
