Sadiq Khan MP, Labour’s Shadow Justice Secretary, responding to new proposals set out today by the Sentencing Council on sentences for serious sexual offences, said:
“It's right and proper that sentences are regularly reviewed to make sure they remain up to date, apace with changes in society and technology, and maintain the public's confidence. That's precisely why Labour created the Sentencing Council whose job it is to do this.
“I welcome this consultation on changes to sentences for serious sexual offences. The recent growth in attacks being videoed is a despicable aggravating feature which should be recognised when it comes to sentencing by the judge."<div>
