Caroline Flint MP, Labour’s Shadow Energy and Climate Change Secretary, commenting on EDF’s price rises of 10.8% to both gas and electricity prices, which come into effect today and will add, on average, £122 to the typical family annual energy bill, said:
"As the cold weather sets in, people will not understand how the energy giants can get away with inflation-busting price rises this winter when they are already making huge profits. Energy companies always blame price rises on wholesale costs, but with prices and profits both up, customers will be right to question whether EDF is really playing fair.
"Families and pensioners struggling with soaring energy bills and facing more price rises this winter deserve better than this out of touch Government. We need a One Nation Labour government to break the dominance of the energy giants, open up the energy market, protect vulnerable customers from being ripped off and create a tough new energy regulator with the power to force energy companies to pass on savings to consumers."
