Chuka Umunna MP, Labour’s Shadow Business Secretary, commenting on the closure of Comet, said:
“The collapse of Comet after 79 years of trading is a devastating blow to thousands of employees losing their jobs just before Christmas. It is a sad day for British retail.
“It will strike people as wrong that almost 7,000 employees should lose their jobs, the taxpayer landed with a £50 million bill and yet others involved with Comet allegedly walk away with tens of millions of pounds.
“Due to the lack of transparency and information surrounding Comet and the fact the taxpayer is faced with a large bill, it is right the Insolvency Service now investigates what happened at Comet as a matter of urgency.”
