Kevin Brennan MP, Labour's Shadow Schools Minister, commenting on the GCSE English resit results, said:
"The fact that nearly 50,000 English GCSE exams were retaken by pupils this year - over 30,000 in English Language alone shows the scale of Michael Gove's GCSE fiasco.
"43 per cent of those pupils have now got at least a C grade that is so vital for future study or work. I congratulate them on their hard work.
"However this whole saga has rumbled on for months. There are thousands of other children who are waiting on a High Court ruling to see if they will get the grades they deserve.
"This fiasco could have been avoided if Michael Gove had ordered a regrade like the Welsh Government and a full public inquiry to restore confidence in the exam system."
