David Hanson MP, Labour’s Shadow Police Minister, responding to reports in a drop in younger police officers, said:
"These figures are the direct consequence of the Governments damaging 20 per cent cut in funding to police.
"It is vital that we get young people engaged and wanting to join the police - the cuts in funding and consequential recruitment freeze in many forces is now leading to a fall in younger members of the police and a lost generation of police officers.
"The public need the police to reflect its make-up - this has the real potential to further hit confidence in policing.
"The Home Secretary needs to rethink the police settlement urgently for 2013/14."
