Caroline Flint MP, Labour's Shadow Energy and Climate Change Secretary, commenting on the announcement that EDF's UK profits increased by 7.5% in 2012, said:

“People will not understand how the energy giants can get away with inflation-busting price rises this winter when they are already making huge profits.

“Energy companies always blame price rises on wholesale costs, but with prices and profits both up, customers have the right to ask whether EDF is really playing fair.

“The time has come for a complete overhaul of our energy market. We need a One Nation Labour government to break the dominance of the energy giants, open up the energy market, protect vulnerable customers from being ripped off and create a tough new energy regulator with the power to force energy companies to pass on savings to consumers.”
