As clock is turned back for women, David Cameron and Nick Clegg need to take responsibility and action to prevent it - Yvette Cooper.

Yvette Cooper MP, Labour's Shadow Minister for Women and Equalities, responding to the Counting Women In coalition repo rt on declining levels of women in positions of power and influence, said:

"The clock is being turned back for women in this country and David Cameron and Nick Clegg need to take responsibility and action to prevent it.

"According to the Counting Women In coalition report and the World Economic Forum Britain is falling down the global league tables when it comes to women's access to power and political representation after years of progress.

"Ministers should be demonstrating leadership and doing more to support women's equality.

"Instead, the Prime Minister has cut the number of women in the Cabinet and George Osborne's budgets have hit women three times as hard as men. Cuts to childcare and maternity pay are making it even harder for women to juggle careers and family life.

"And Nick Clegg and the Liberal Democrats who have the lowest proportion of women in Parliament need to demonstrate they take women's concerns seriously.

"We need serious action from the Govermment to support women's equality, not drift or damaging policies which risk putting progress into reverse."
