Chuka Umunna MP, Labour’s Shadow Business Secretary, commenting on an expected announcement of new apprenticeships at Barclays by Vince Cable, said:
“We are proud to be celebrating National Apprenticeships Week, launched by Labour in government and now in its sixth year. Barclays’ announcement of new apprenticeships to coincide with National Apprenticeships Week is welcome news. We need to do all we can to boost quality apprenticeship opportunities, particularly for young people at a time when almost a million young people are out of work.
“However, the recent fall in the number of apprenticeships for under 19s is greatly concerning, as well as recent evidence showing that one in five apprentices say they are not receiving training and that many are not being paid. Ministers need to get a grip and back Labour’s plans for more, better quality apprenticeships.”<div>
