Ed Balls MP, Labour’s Shadow Chancellor, commenting on the forthcoming spending review on 26 June, said:
“This is a spending review David Cameron and George Osborne never wanted or expected to happen.
“They said their plan would balance the books by the time of the next election, but their failure to deliver economic growth means there is now set to be a deficit of over £80 billion in 2015/16. That is why the government is now looking for even more spending cuts and tax rises.
“But instead of asking what’s gone wrong and what needs to be done in the Budget and the spending review to get the economy growing strongly, David Cameron and George Osborne just want to stick with the same old failing policies.
“It’s no wonder that we now have the extraordinary situation of Cabinet Ministers, who are clearly losing confidence in this Chancellor, making their spending bids in public and openly calling for a change of economic direction.”<div>
