Yvonne Fovargue MP, Labour’s Shadow Local Transport Minister, commenting on the Government’s Quarterly bus statistics published today said:
“Under David Cameron and his out of touch Government working people are facing a cost of living crisis. People are now being priced off buses by inflation-busting fare rises or seeing their local service axed altogether.
“The Government’s own figures reveal how bus journeys have declined in the past year as a direct consequence of the 28 per cent cut to local transport funding and the 20 per cent reduction in direct subsidies to support essential routes.
“Bus services are a vital lifeline for many people particularly low income households and those living in rural communities. The loss of a local bus service or unaffordable fare rises can make the difference between a young person being able to stay on in education or someone out of work being able to take up a job. The Government’s misguided too far and too fast cuts to support for bus services will therefore cost the country even more in the long term.”
