Douglas Alexander MP, Labour's Shadow Foreign Secretary, responding to today's Human Rights Watch report into violations of international law by the Syrian government, said:
"This report confirms the desperate and brutal determination of Assad to cling to power, regardless of the cost to the people of Syria.
"The use of air strikes on civilian targets within his own country - targeting women and children from the skies - warrants the condemnation of the whole international community.
"As representatives of the G8 gather in London, the case must be put to Russia to now help bring an end to the violence in Syria, and engage the Assad regime in UN-led talks on a peaceful political transition.
"The presence of a now confirmed al-Qaeda affiliated jihadist militia - the al-Nusra Front - on the ground in Syria only reinforces the need for the UK Government to now clarify its stance on the EU arms embargo and supplying weapons directly to the Syrian opposition."<div>
