Sadiq Khan MP, Labour’s Shadow Justice Secretary, said in response to the Bar Council’s warning over the Tory-led Government’s legal aid changes:

“Finding savings in our criminal justice system is crucial, and anyone who has worked in our courts system and with our prosecutorial services  knows there is considerable waste and bureaucracy. But the Government’s proposals ignore these potential savings, and instead impose a model for legal aid which prioritises the cost of legal representation ahead of quality. Many are genuinely concerned that this will lead to undue pressure to plead guilty as it is cheaper, even for those who are innocent. The Justice Secretary needs to urgently address these concerns, unless he wants to be responsible for introducing a system that could lead to state sponsored miscarriages of justice.”
