Shabana Mahmood MP, Labour's Shadow Higher Education Minister, commenting on reports that the Government is considering increasing interest rates on existing student loans, said:

"It is outrageous that, after publicly saying they had no plans to do so, we now find out that the Government is privately considering a plan to raise interest rates on existing loans for graduates to pay extra for their sale of the loan book. This would represent a complete betrayal by David Cameron and Nick Clegg of the 3.6 million affected students and graduates who thought they were taking out loans on completely different terms.

"The Tory-led Government must now urgently clarify their plans regarding the sale of the student loan book and reassure graduates that their repayments will not be raised simply to pay for this Government's failure."
