Sadiq Khan MP, Labour’s Shadow Justice Secretary, commenting on the Ministry of Justice report rating the performance of prisons, said:
“This report is seriously worrying. It is shocking that two of the three worst rated prisons are brand new and privately run. There can be no excuses from the Justice Secretary who urgently must get a grip on the situation in these prisons, and reassure the public that both have clear strategies in place for turning round their shocking performance.
“HMP Oakwood is regularly held up by Chris Grayling as being the cheapest prison in the whole system, but today’s shocking report by the Ministry of Justice shows his praise is misdirected. Once again the reality is very different from the rhetoric.
“We should all be concerned that these prisons are not doing enough to both punish and reform offenders, and that those released will too readily drift back into a life of crime. This is neither an efficient use of taxpayers’ money nor does it do enough to keep communities safe.”<div>
