Liam Byrne MP, Labour's Shadow Work and Pensions Secretary, responding to the DWP claim that there is a record private sector employment fuelled by a jobs boom, said:
“This Government is completely out of touch. They talk of a jobs boom when there simply isn’t enough work to go round: youth unemployment is edging back towards a million, long-term unemployment is rising, and more than 1 in 10 people in jobs say they want to work longer hours.
"Many are desperate for a job but Government programmes are letting them down. The Youth Contract is on course to miss its target by 92 per cent, and the flagship Work Programme has not hit a single one of its minimum performance standards.
"David Cameron should be taking urgent action to bring down long-term unemployment with a Compulsory Jobs Guarantee to get anyone unemployed for more than two years into a paying job – one they would be required to take."<div>
