Andy Burnham MP, Labour's Shadow Education Secretary, said on the proposed teachers' strike:
"The Tory-led Government has got to take the blame for this classroom chaos. Everyone - parents and pupils - want to see schools remain open, and I think there is a great deal more scope for constructive talks over this. But the Government have got to adopt a far more positive approach.
"We think it’s a mistake to take strike action while negotiations are ongoing – that won’t help the unions make their case on what’s happening to public sector pensions or win the argument; all it does is inconvenience the public. Strikes must always be the very last resort."
